I’m going to start taking Salsa dancing and Ballroom dancing.
For practice and for the class I’m not sure what I should wear.
Can anybody help?
There is no need to purchase the style of clothing as seen on tv programmes such as ‘Strictly Dancing’. For practice, both in Ballroom and Latin (Salsa is a form of Latin) all you need is a loose fitting dress or loose skirt and simple top e.g. blouse.
The most importand item of clothing are the shoes. In this case I would reccommend that you invest in a pair of Ballroom dance shoes (to start with you can use them for both Ballroom and Latin) Later you may wish to also buy a pair of latin shoes. (Wifey has 5 pairs of dance shoes)
Dance shoes have a suede sole and are designed to allow you to slide but also support the feet.
DON’T dance in rubber or composite soled shoes
You should be able to find a dance clothing shop locally that sells dance shoes. If you have Yellow Pages you could try them for local shops.

In this episode of the salsa podcast, we show you how to do some ‘magichands’ drop, a quick hammerlock to a cross-body lead, and then to a copa for the ladies. And now something for the ladies! This salsa dance video will provide the ladies a few styling tricks when social dancing with a good lead. Jocelyn will show the ladies how to take advantage of specific dance cues from your lead in order to perform clean salsa styling. Using this in your social dancing will help you enjoy playing with the instruments in a song much more enjoyable. As a note to leads, you do not have to fill in an entire song of back-to-back patterns. Always remember to leave some room for the ladies to style and enjoy the salsa song.
